Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders Meeting

by Todd Metheny on April 30, 2010

I’m packed and ready to depart shortly for the 2010 Berkshire Hathaway shareholders meeting.  Last year approximately 35,000 people came.  This year, with the split, shares are available at a price suited for just about anyone, and they’re predicting that about 50,000 people will show up.  Clever marketing leads this to be a huge sales day for Berkshire subsidiaries.

I’m excited to attend again.  I don’t know how many more years Buffett will be able to do this, so it’s something I definitely don’t want to miss.  I’m not planning on taking notes on the talk this year.  I’m sure I’ll have some thoughts about something he says or doesn’t say, and I’ll share those here.  Right ups on the meeting will be available from about 1000 blogs and news sources, so I’m going to consider that market niche filled.

As a parting thought, since the prices on everything get jacked up for this particular weekend, which of the following offers a better value:

Going to the annual meeting:

Airfare for 2: $450

Hotel for 2 nights: $400+

Rental Car for 2 days: $70

Meal on the road:  $80

Total:  $1000

Or, purchasing additional shares of Berkshire (or any other company you like):

12 shares of BRK-B @ 77.35 (where it’s trading as I write this) = $928.20.

Just a thought.  I have obviously chosen the trip for two to the meeting.  Maybe I’m a fool, but I value the experience.  I’m also going to get to spend some time with my brother-in-law and father-in-law.  It will be their first meeting.  Win.  Thanks for reading.
